The snub to Sri Lankan players should come as no surprise. They will be unavailable for the second half of the tournament due to their tour of UK. 

Daredevils bought back maverick former England captain Kevin Pietersen for Rs.9 crore and India’s Test opener Murali Vijayfor Rs.5 crore. Vijay, who was earlier with Chennai Super Kings, was the first cricketer to go under the hammer. Pietsersen was first sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.9 crore but Daredevils used the Right to Match (RTM) card to buy him back.

Daredevils were the early bidders for Karthik and Sunrisers Hyderabad competed with them for a while before Knight Riders again made a late bid after it had crossed the Rs 10 crore mark but withdrew immediately and Daredeveils eventually got their man.

The Pathan brothers — Irfan and Yusuf — saw their worth nosedive as compared to what they were paid in the 2011 auction. Yusuf, whose base price was Rs. 2 crore, got opening bids only from Sunrisers and Kings XI, before KKR used the RTM to buy him back at Rs. 3.25 crore. Irfan’s base price was Rs. 1.5 crore and Sunrisers bought him for Rs. 2.4 crore.

Australia’s Ashes hero Mitchell Johnson was sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6.50 crore while his compatriot David Warnerwent to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.5.5 crore.

India discard Virender Sehwag went to Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 3.2 crore while Kolkata Knight Riders used their RTM card to buy back South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis for Rs.5.5 crore that was made by Chennai Super Kings.

In the next set of marquee players, Australia’s T20 captain George Bailey went to Kings XI for Rs.3.25 crore while Sunrisers used their RTM card to buy back West Indies Test and T20 captain Darren Sammy from Daredevils for Rs. 3.5 crore.

Super Kings also used their only RTM card to buy back South African Faf du Plesis from Daredevils for Rs. 4.75 crore.

Mumbai Indians bought Mike Hussey (Rs. 5 crore) and Zaheer Khan (Rs. 2.6 crore) while Sunrisers used the RTM card to buy back Amit Mishra (Rs. 4.75 crore) from Daredevils.

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene was the only marquee player to remain unsold. 

In the first session, franchises utilised seven right-to-match cards: Pietersen (Daredevils), Jacques Kallis (Knight Riders), Yusuf (Knight Riders), Faf du Plessis (Chennai Super Kings), Amit Mishra (Sunrisers), Darren Sammy (Sunrisers), Pragyan Ojha (Mumbai) were the players bought back by their previous IPL teams.
