The new selection committee led by
Sandeep Patil recalled Yuvraj Singh and
Harbhajan Singh to the Indian squad for
the first two tests against England.
Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay was also
recalled, while middle order batsman
Suresh Raina lost his place.
Yuvraj, who made a stunning comeback to
the T20I side after undergoing treatment
for a rare form of cancer, impressed the
selectors with a double hundred in the
Duleep Trophy semi-final. The selection
panel will also be looking at his role as a
part-time spinner, as he picked up 5
wickets against England in the practice
match for India A.
Ishant Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane
retained their spots, while Raina, whose
place in the side was always under
contention, made way for Vijay.
Tamil Nadu opener Vijay has been
rewarded for his recent exploits in the Irani
Cup and Challenger Trophy, but he is
unlikely to feature in the starting XI, given
that both Sehwag and Gambhir are in the
15 man squad.
Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, who
picked up some minor injuries during the
Ranji Trophy matches, were included in the
15-member squad.
Zaheer walked off the field with cramps on
day three of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match
against Uttar Pradesh but he was ruled fit
after a fitness test. The first Test against
England, will be played in Ahmedabad from
November 15-19.
Zaheer underwent a fitness test at the
Wankhede stadium during the lunch break
of the Ranji Trophy match. National Cricket
Academy physio Ashish Kaushik and
Mumbai Cricket Association physio
Niranjan Pandit watched over Zaheer's
fitness test.
The veteran pacer bowled for nearly 30
minutes on the practice pitch adjoining the
match pitch after he did some stretching
exercises on the sidelines. He looked in no
discomfort or any pain during the fitness
test, which was conducted as the selection
meeting began at the BCCI headquarters in
Mumbai.
Sehwag had injured his finger while
fielding in the slips against Uttar Pradesh
and batted at No. 6 in Delhi's second
innings. But he blasted a timely century
batting lower down the order to convince
the selectors of his form and fitness.
Subramaniam Badrinath, who was called
up in place of VVS Laxman in the two-Test
series against New Zealand, was dropped.
He made way for Yuvraj, who will bat at
No. 6.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who is nursing
a finger injury and missed Uttar Pradesh's
first Ranji Trophy match against Delhi, was
replaced by Harbhajan.
The team:
MS Dhoni (c), Virender Sehwag, Gautam
Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli,
Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, R
Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha,
Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant
Sharma, Murali Vijay, Zaheer Khan.
